We have found that neglect and cruelty to horses is a huge problem and most often education is one of the best things we can do to break the cycle. When that is not an option, the Sanctuary becomes a place of refuge for those animals.
Shadow was rescued from an abusive home where he kept in a small dirt pen and starved to the point of near death. He was severely emaciated and he had abscessed teeth. After a long rehabilitation, Shadow is doing great. He is well into his 20's now and the picture of health. He will live out the rest of his years at the Sanctuary, never again facing the uncertainty of his future. He has the kindest, most gentle spirit and we are honored to have him with us.
We were contacted by Spice's former owner after she had become disabled and no longer able to care for Spice. Spice had a condition called founder which causes lameness and can ultimately lead to death if not properly treated. Spice requires strict dietary maintenance and aggressive care of her hooves. Occasionally, Spice needs daily medication when her condition flares up. Spice is doing well now and she and Shadow have a special bond. We often see them laying side by side with her resting her head on his back. It is a heart-warming sight to see.
Fred was rescued from a pony ride exhibit where the animals are forced to walk around in circles giving "rides." Unfortunately, his friend Ginger whom we also rescued, did not survive the first winter with us due to the extreme care of arthritis she suffered in both hips. Ginger was not even able to stand up and although it was a difficult decision, the most humane thing we could do for her was to have her put to sleep. We are not sure of exactly what Fred endured but, to this day, he has major trust issues. We will continue to work with him giving him the care and freedom, and above all, the love and respect he deserves.
With our increased acreage in North Carolina, we would eventually like to expand the horse pastures and barns to enable us to help more horses in need. Your support makes a difference! We need your help so that we may continue in our mission to help the animals in need.
