Dogs and Cats

One of our biggest goals is to raise the funds necessary to accommodate more cats and dogs.  Presently, we have numerous cats and dogs with special needs or issues that are not easily adoptable. We do some work with feral cats and also fostering for other shelters.   These are just a few stories of the dogs and cats we care for, each one is unique and to be able to give these animals a second chance is indescribable.

Tinkerbell was found as a puppy, abandoned on a busy highway. She had mange, dozens of ant bites, her paws were bloody and she had so many internal and external parasites that she was severely anemic.  It was amazing she was still alive.  It has taken months of intensive treatment to get her healthy.   She has also been diagnosed with epilepsy, perhaps brought on by a head injury before we rescued her.  In spite of her trauma, Tinkerbell is the sweetest dog you will ever meet. She is so appreciative and it almost looks as if she smiles at you when you see her.  She is the Sanctuary "welcome committee" and when you meet her, you will fall in love with her.

Squirrely was found after we had responded to a complaint for abandoned goats. Upon our investigation, we found that the former owners had indeed moved and left their goats.  In our attempts to catch and help the abandoned goats, 2 kitties appeared out of the palmetto bushes.  Squirrely and another kitten we named Wookie were left to fend for themselves.  Both the kitties were starving and covered in fleas and infected with ear mites.  We have since gotten both Squirrely and Wookie vaccinated and spayed and neutered.  Squirrely is a very shy cat at first and it has taken her some time to get used to the life at the Sanctuary.  She is doing much better since our relocation and has found "her private space" with our son in his room.

Poko came to the Sanctuary along with 2 other Chihuahuas after their owner had passed away.  We know it was difficult for Poko and Max and Buttons to loose their beloved caretaker.  With her owner's illness, Poko's own medical condition was overlooked.  Poko has been diagnosed with thyroid condition and will be on medication for the rest of her life.  We are happy to say that we placed Max and Buttons together and they are doing great.  Poko is doing great as well and we are pleased to be able to give her the care she deserves for the rest of her years.

Poko and Max & Buttons story has a happy ending,  please make arrangements for your animals in your will.    If you are interested in giving your pets a lifetime of care here at the Sanctuary, please contact us.

Shadow and Patches are sisters.  They came to the Sanctuary after being abandoned and in need of a home.  They both love to hang out with the goats and you will often see them sunning themselves right alongside the goat herd.  Shadow, especially, loves to follow us around while we do our chores.  If she catches you in any sitting or crouching position, she will run and jump in you lap and immediately start kneading and purring loudly.  Since our move, her sister Patches is also becoming more affectionate and trusting.

Rocco was another neglect case.  His former owners left him in a small, confined area for days at a time without the basic necessities.  We have had to work with him a great deal.  It is obvious that he was also abused and has many fears.  We have incredible patience with dogs such as Rocco and although the road to rehabilitation is often a struggle, in the end, it is all worth it.

Cookie is one of our newest rescues.  In the midst of our relocation on one of our stops somewhere in Georgia, we came across this abandoned kitten near a busy highway.  We were told he was the only kitten left of a litter and all his litter mates had been killed and that his mother had not been seen in a week.  It was apparent that something was wrong with his back legs and of course, we made room and brought him along to the new Sanctuary  location.  Cookie was quickly tested, vaccinated and neutered.  It wasn't surprising to discover he had some severe injuries that had healed the best they could.  Cookie had a broken pelvis, broken femur and dislocated hip.  Due to the fact his injuries had already healed and since he is now free from parasites and has gained quite a bit of weight, Cookie is now strong enough to run, jump and play, we will wait to see if the future brings a need for surgery.

We need your help to continue helping these beautiful creatures, many of whom would have been killed if we had not agreed to bring them to the Sanctuary.  We are a no-kill Sanctuary and we are willing to care for these animals, to give them a life of peace and love, for the rest of their years.  Many of our  "care for life" residents are on multiple medications and require constant Veterinary supervision.
