The East County Humane Society at the Blue Heart Sanctuary is a no-kill, non profit 501 (c) 3 animal sanctuary. We have been operating in Manatee County, Florida from the beginning of 2001 to June 2006 and have just recently relocated the Sanctuary to an unbelievable property on 35 acres in Eastern Yancey County in beautiful Western North Carolina. Our move will enable the current rescues that we are caring for to have more room and will allow us the ability to expand and help a greater number of animals in the future. Our mission is to provide sanctuary to homeless, abused and neglected animals.
We offer love and care to those rescued animals and rehabilitate them with the hope of finding an appropriate adoptive situation. We provide extensive medical care, shelter and a safe haven for rescued dogs, cats, sheep, goats, pigs, donkeys and horses. Our animals are in a protective surrounding yet, are free to live in a natural, peaceful setting.
Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission-to be of service to them whenever they require it. --St Francis of Assisi
Our education programs in local schools are targeted at educating young people on the responsibility of owning pets and importance of spaying and neutering. Also to educate on the prevention of cruelty to animals and the need for preserving wildlife.
Our adoption program is aimed at placing adoptable animals in excellent, loving and caring homes. We interview and background check all applicants and have a routine follow-up program.
Our sanctuary will be managed and maintained in a manner that will enhance the natural wildlife of the area.
The vision we have for future programs include:
- Animal assisted therapy in conjunction with hospitals, nursing homes and hospice
- Acquiring additional acreage which will enable us to help a greater number of animals and establish a nature preserve and
- The development of a hippotherapy program for at-risk and physically challenged children.
We need YOU! With your support, we can make a difference in the lives of animals. The Sanctuary exists solely on contributions and donations from people like you. Your tax deductible support offsets the cost of food, shelter, and medical care for these beautiful creatures. 100% of all donations go directly to the animals. We have no paid staff.
